"The Japanese Bridge")
- Japan 1956, 112 min.
Director:
Starring:
- AWASHIMA Chikage
- YAMAMOTO Fujiko
Notes:
- Nihonbashi is a story of mystery and the complexity of
woman's attachment to love in the world of geisha girls.
It is adorned with the downtown Edo (Tokyo) atmosphere.
- IZUMI Kyoka (1873-1939), a distinguished writer of modern
Japanese literature with a unique style, who has gained
popularity within contemporary society, has published his
novel "Nihonbashi" in 1914. It was first
cinematized in 1929 by MIZOGUCHI Kenji in black and
white. The gifted director ICHIKAWA Kon has prepared this
colour film version from a screenplay written by his wife
WADA Natto. It was a great challenge for him to shoot the
setting and subject of the Meiji Era (1969-1912). He
attempts to reproduce the beauty of IZUMI's world of
emotions with the help of colour and lighting to add to
the atmosphere of the Nihonbashi world of yesterday.
